ShelterBox is responding to the earthquake that struck central Italy in the
early hours of 6 April by sending immediate assistance for people left
homeless by the disaster.

“Having monitored the information about the impact of the disaster, we
decided that an immediate response was warranted,” says Lasse Petersen,
General Manager of the Cornwall-based charity. “A team is leaving today with
250 ShelterBoxes and should arrive in Italy late tomorrow. They will be met
in the disaster area by another team which has already left from France.”

ShelterBox Response Team members Nicola Jones and Andrew Bis set off from
the Cornwall HQ this afternoon to drive through the night with a truck
loaded with ShelterBoxes. A larger shipment is leaving our storage depot at
the same time and in total will provide enough shelter for more than 2000
people.

The earthquake, measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale, struck central Italy as
residents slept in the early hours of 6 April. According to latest reports,
more than 90 people are reported dead and more than 50,000 have been left
homeless.

Each ShelterBox contains a 10-person tent, blankets, water purification and
cooking equipment
